I stood on the steps of the Library of the Unexplained, watching Conor dodge well-meaning crew members and council witches alike. Emergency vehicle sirens blared in distance, indicating someone had gotten around to calling an ambulance. I took a step, intending to follow Conor, to make sure Sierra was going to be okay, but my head swam and the world spun.

“Whoa,” I said softly as I sank down and sat on the steps. Big bursts of magic and the adrenaline rush had taken its toll.

“Ms. Calhoun?” A young man dressed in jeans and a T-shirt that had Production scrawled across the front walked up the steps. “Are you all right?”

I nodded. “Just a little pregnant, that’s all.”

His eyebrows shot straight up, disappearing under his long bangs. “Oh. Do you… um, need anything?”

“Got an energy bar on you?”

“Yeah, actually, I do,” he said, fumbling around in his pocket. “Here.”

“Perfect. Thanks. I should know better than to leave the house without snacks these days. It seems the little peanut is always hungry.”

“Yeah, me too,” he said with an easy smile as he nodded to the energy bar in my hand. Then he sobered as he glanced in the direction I’d last seen Conor.

His radio crackled as someone said, “Production Two, we need you ASAP at the Whitmore dressing room. Emergency, code level red.”

“I’m on my way,” he said into the device. Then he turned to me. “Take care of yourself, okay? It looks like we’re going to exceed our drama quota today.”

Turning quickly, he moved down the stairs. I followed and quickened my pace to catch up with him. “What’s a code level red?”

“It means one of the stars is in meltdown. Someone on the crew needs to calm her down.”

“Her? Why do you assume it’s Sierra?” I asked, irritated. For goddess’s sake, hadn’t Conor just carried her out of here half-unconscious? How could she already be in a meltdown?

“It usually is,” he said, then jogged off in the direction of Sierra’s dressing room.

Unsettled by what had happened and worried about Sierra, I followed but took my time while I ate the energy bar. It wasn’t long before my energy level picked up and I started to feel like myself again… right up until I saw Conor pacing back and forth in front of Sierra’s cottage, his hands fisted in his hair.

“What’s going on?” I asked a tall redheaded woman standing by.

She turned to me, her pentacle medallion flashing in the afternoon sunlight. “Sierra is in there. Conor won’t let anyone in to check her vitals.” She waved a hand off to her right, indicating the paramedic standing by. “When he took her in there, she was barely conscious.”

“Why?” I asked, although I was pretty sure I already knew the answer. Fear and anger combined with panic and distrust rolled off him in thick waves. They crashed into me, making my stomach churn. Conor was afraid and very pissed off. And he trusted no one. I should’ve probably hightailed it out of there right then, but I couldn’t just leave Sierra.
